Union City, GA

Union City is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 19,456 at the 2010 census. Union City is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Atlanta and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It is home to the headquarters of Delta Air Lines and College Park Airport. The city is also home to the South Fulton Medical Center, a 193-bed hospital operated by Tenet Healthcare. Union City’s motto is “One Community, One Future.” 

In 2008, Union City was ranked as the 10th best place to live in the United States by Money magazine. It was also ranked as the 13th safest city in America by Forbes.com in 2009. Union City has a Council-Manager form of government. The current mayor is Vince Williams, who was elected to office in 2013. The chief of police is Anthony Carter. Public education in Union City is provided by Fulton County Schools. The city is served by two high schools – Langston Hughes High School and Sandy Creek High School – as well as one middle school and four elementary schools. Union City is also home to Georgia Perimeter College’s South Campus. The Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is located just minutes from Union City.

Union City was founded in 1866 when the town of Richland and the village of Marshall merged to form a single community. The new town was named Union City in honor of the recently ended Civil War, and its founders hoped that it would serve as a symbol of healing and reconciliation.
